1. Triethyl orthoformate is an alkylating agent and formylation agent commonly used in chemical laboratories.?They are easy to store, but they are highly reactive.?They can be used as alkylating agents and can easily transfer alkyl groups to various alcoholic hydroxyl groups; as formylation agents, they can be used under acidic or basic conditions.?Alkylation of alcohols with triethyl orthoformate as an alkylating agent can result in the corresponding alkylation of various alcohols.?The polyol can be alkylated to produce the corresponding cyclic orthoformate (Formula 1) [1~3].?The protective orthoformic esters of aldehydes or ketones can be used to protect aldehydes and ketones to form formate esters and the corresponding acetals or ketals (Formula 2) [4,5].?Formic acid catalyzed by Lewis acid, the orthoformate can be used as a formylation reagent. Compared with other formylation reagents, it has the advantages of simple operation, high yield and so on.?Orthoformic acid is easily catalyzed by acid in situ to produce dialkoxy carbocations that can be used directly in formylation reactions.?This type of formylation reaction can be on the α-C ortho to the carbonyl (Formula 3) [6].?Silyl ethers of enols (Equation 4) [7] or ketone enolates (Equation 5) [8] can react with enols (or analogs) to react with carbamate in situ generated carbamate ions to form Beta-acetal ketones.
